Our skeleton can be divided into two large portions: the axial and appendicular skeleton. Within them, we can find all our bones!

👉 Also learn about the adult human skeleton and appendicular skeleton!

The axial skeleton has all the bones that lie on our central axis, the bones in the “middle”. Their main function is to protect the Nervous System and the organs found in this region, such as the heart and lungs. Hence, it is the main part of the skeletal system!

Among the 80 bones in this system, we have the skull, spine, ribs and sternum.

To go even deeper, we can find in this division:

  • 14 bones of the face
  • 8 skull bones
  • 7 cervical vertebrae
  • 12 thoracic vertebrae
  • 5 lumbar vertebrae
  • 5 fused sacral vertebrae
  • 4 fused vertebrae of the coccyx
  • 24 ribs (divided into 12 pairs)
  • 1 sternum
  • 1 hyoid bone

Therefore, this part of the skeleton has all the bones that are part of our central axis, it is what protects our organs and vital systems!
